Description

La Vida Breve (The Brief Life) is an opera in two acts and four scenes by Manuel de Falla, composed between August 1904 and March 1905, with the first performance given in Nice in April 1913.

The complete opera, only an hour in length, is seldom performed today, but its dances are, especially the famous music from Act 2 entitled ‘Interlude and Dance’, which is popular in concerts of Spanish music. The virtuoso violinist Fritz Kreisler in 1926 arranged for violin and piano the dance from this pairing under the title Danse Espagnole’.

Numerous other arrangements have been made of this dance for various instrumentations, including this for brass band by Tom Donaldson.
